Hour of Code!

The Hour of Code is being held this week worldwide.  The goal is to have every student participate in an hour of coding sometime during the week.  In years past, over 400,000,000 students have participated in over 180 countries. Today we were 24 of those students who participated! Check out these videos to see WHY we participated and check out the photos to see your child having a blast! I think we have some future computer programmers on our hands!

Snowman Multiplication!

We had a fun math activity today after our 2 days of testing. We read the story, Snowmen At Night. And then we worked on our multiplication facts for 2s, 4s, and 8s. Every snowman needed to have 2 eyes, 4 buttons, and 8 pieces of coal for the mouth. When the students partnered up, they had to pick a card to see how many snowmen they needed to draw on their paper.

Flowers For Kids

Today I had Enchanted Florist come in to do a Flowers for Kids lesson. Kristine, from Enchanted Florist, taught the class about different types of flowers. They learned that roses have thorns to protect themselves from animals, but also to store water. They learned about how to care for flowers. Did you know that there is a 5 second rule with flowers too? As soon as a flower is cut, you need to get it in water before the bottom dries up to protect the flower. They also learned about the art of bouquet making. First you have a filler, then you get a line or two to make your bouquet tall. After that, you grab a focal flower and finish it off with some greens. The class even learned how to make flower food! There are 3 ingredients including water....see if they remember the other 2!

Deciduous or Coniferous?

If you ask your child that question tonight, I guarantee that they will be able to tell you what kind of trees in your neighborhood are coniferous trees and what kind of trees are deciduous trees!

Conifers:
-triangle shape
-produce cones
-evergreen
-needles

Deciduous:
-lollipop shape
-have leaves (simple or complex)
-lose their leaves every year
-have flowers or fruit

We ventured around our school grounds to check out our local trees. This was a great introduction to our first science unit of the year!

***FUN FACT: St. Norbert College's campus has every tree native to Wisconsin :)

It was wonderful to have all of your children's special guests at school today. It is definitely cool to see how proud they are to show their special people around our room and different activities that we do in class. For those of you that were unable to make it, I threw together some of their song clips for your enjoyment!

Geocaching!

Yesterday morning, Tony from Fallen Timbers, came to school to teach us how GPS devices work. We practiced marking waypoints and then using the GPS to find the waypoint. The class was partnered up and he gave them each a container. They had to put their names on a paper and put that in the cup. They placed it somewhere in the front area and marked it using their GPS devices. Then, Tony gave their devices to a different group and told them who they were looking for. They had to use the GPS to find the right container. Once they thought they had the right one, they opened it up to see whose names were inside. The class had a blast!
