Author in Residence

Our Author in Residence, Katie McKy, put on an awesome writing workshop for us this week. She is not only a phenomenal story-teller, but also very talented at making kids actually WANT to write. She set up camp, literally, in our gym beginning on Wednesday. We had two writing sessions with her. During our first session, Katie took us on a camping trip. She taught the kids strategies for adding details to their writing, structural strategies with commas, and how to stay focused on their writing NO MATTER WHAT!
During our second session, we focused on our opinions and persuading others. The class learned the importance of focusing on the good and the bad of something in order to gain your listener's attention and trust. They also learned about friendly letter format, and once again to stay focused and write no matter what may come along and distract you!
Many students even got her autograph today! They were just thrilled to be able to meet and work with Katie McKy! I hope our enthusiasm for writing continues for the rest of the school year!

Knowledge-A-Thon Success!

Our knowledge-a-thon wrapped up on Friday with an awesome assembly! Students got to participate in an obstacle course and have their name entered in drawings to win Kindle Fires and Chromebooks! Our very own Abby was one of those lucky winners!

What is even more awesome is all of the dedication and donations that you as parents contributed to make it a success. We were able to raise over $12,000 for our school! How awesome is that!

Thank you to each of you for your continued support of our class and Dickinson School!

Junior Achievement

From saving to spending, they've got it down!

We have the pleasure of having Mrs. Kawula come to our classroom once a week for Junior Achievement. Today the class talked about the difference between saving money in their bank account (deposit) or spending money (withdrawal). They were able to play a game where they had different scenarios. Sometimes they got to do fun things like go to the movies, but then they realized that doing that cost them money out of their bank account! Hopefully they will have a better understanding of why you might sometimes tell them no at the store (hopefully ;))!

Hat's On For Dr. Seuss!

Happy Read Across America Day!

Today we wore crazy stripes and hats and even chewed striped gum in order to celebrate Dr. Seuss!

As a school, we Dropped Everything And Read (DEAR). It was a truly enjoyable day of reading! So, pick up a book or Kindle tonight and read as a family!
